| ‘Lord, our master whose glory fills the earth,
show us by your Passion that you, the true eternal
Son of God, triumph even in the deepest humiliation’ |
| Chester Music Society Choir invites you to contemplate Passiontide as it performs what is often considered Bach’s most vivid work, The Passion According to St John. The biblical passages from St John’s gospel are set as recitative for the Evangelist, Jesus and Pilate or as choruses with urgent orchestral accompaniment representing the mob’s cries of ‘Crucify!’ The beautiful arias provide a personal reflection on the action while the chorale passages tell the communal response using bold and striking harmonies. Overall the effect is as dramatic as the most dynamic opera. Join Chester Music Society Choir, Liverpool Sinfonia, the first-class line up of soloists and conductor Graham Jordan Ellis as they bring the season alive with this compelling performance of the Passiontide story. |
