Chester Music Society Choir will draw its varied and highly successful season to a close with a concert of beautiful Cathedral Classics. With a significant part of the programme dedicated to classic English choral works of the 20th century, the performance will include Hubert Parry’s masterly Blest Pair of Sirens and I was glad, the latter, the opulent anthem composed for the coronation of Edward VII in 1901. Well-loved anthems by Britten, Bairstow, Ireland, Vaughn Williams and Harris will complete the English programme. Although perhaps better known for his symphonies and chamber works, Franz Joseph Haydn also composed much church music, including six settings of the Mass. It is his congenial St Nicholas Mass, written in 1772, which the choir will perform on this occasion. So why not join Chester Music Society Choir and accomplished organist Simon Russell under the direction of Graham Jordan Ellis for a concert which promises to be the perfect tonic for an early summer evening.
